Welcome to Rewind Backups for Jira Cloud!
Thank you for taking the time to consider the Rewind Backups platform.
We know that choosing the right solution for your business-critical SaaS application data can be challenging. It is important to us that you have the opportunity to thoroughly explore what we believe is the best backup and recovery solution available.
Understanding that your time is a valuable resource, we want to help you do this as efficiently as possible. Each of the following test scenarios has been created to demonstrate a particular aspect of our award-winning solution. Follow each of them in turn for a hassle-free experience.
If you should encounter any challenges, please contact our support team by emailing help@rewind.com. It would be our pleasure to assist you.
A note about the test activities we have defined:
- Our tests will include the entire process of creating content, running a backup, purging that content, and then restoring it. In a real-world scenario, backups will have already run, an incident will have occurred, and your only task will be to restore the data.
- When backups include large amounts of data they will take some time to move through Atlassian APIs into the Rewind system. Performing a first-time “full backup” of a large data pool may take hours to complete. Please be patient before continuing your testing. The advantage of an incremental system like Rewind (only backing up what has changed) is that future backups will be significantly faster.
Resources you may find valuable during your evaluation:
- Security Portal (Learn how Rewind keeps your data secure and compliant. You may need to request access.)
- Known limitations & FAQ - Backup capabilities are defined by Atlassian APIs. This article details what is possible, and provides insight in the event your backup or restore does not go as planned.
-
A full list of restorable items - This article contains a list of all of the data points that can be backed up from Jira.
Before You Begin
- Ensure your account has the “Administer Jira” global permission.
- Consider creating a test or trial environment in Jira for the purposes of your evaluation.
✓ Test Scenario A
Restoring a project that was permanently deleted from Jira
In this scenario, we will simulate the accidental loss, and recovery, of a Jira project.
Testing Steps
- In Jira, create a new test Software Project.
- Select Scrum and Use A Template.
- Select a company-managed Project.
- Add some Project details.
- Create a new Issue in your Project.
- Populate the new Issue with content as you see fit.
- In the Rewind Backups platform, navigate to your Jira account in the top right dropdown menu.
- Trigger backups by clicking “Backup Now”.
- Wait for the backup to complete (the animated progress indicator will disappear and you will receive a notification email.)
-
Return to Jira and permanently delete the test project including emptying it from the trash bin.
- To do this, navigate to View All Projects.
- Find the Project you want to delete and click the “3 dots menu” to the right of it.
- Click “Move to Trash”.
- Click the Settings gear in the top navigation, then “Projects” under Jira Settings.
- Navigate to “Trash” and then permanently delete the test project.
- Data is not immediately purged from Jira. You may need to wait a few minutes for it to be fully removed.
- Once you have confirmed deletion, return to Rewind and open the Vault tab.
- Refresh your browser to ensure you have the latest information available. (You can do this with CTRL-R on PC, or COMMAND-R on Mac.)
- Search for your Project by name or ID.
- Click the View Versions button.
- Select a version (from the options on the right) you wish to restore to (there is likely only one option).
- Click “Restore To This Version” (found at the bottom of the Rewind interface.)
- Confirm and wait for the restore to complete (the animated progress indicator will disappear and you will receive a notification email.)
- Once your restore is complete, return to Jira and verify that the Project and its Issues have been restored.
- Return to the Vault page and click Backup Now to run a manual backup and capture the most up-to-date structure of your project.
Expected Result
- The Jira Project is re-created along with its Issues, Boards, and the elements of each object.

- Select the version you wish to restore and click “Restore to this version.”
- Verify that the issue has been updated to its previous version.
Expected Result
- The issue is updated and its context reflects an older version.
✓ Test Scenario D
Performing an Account Level Restore
In this scenario, we will simulate the full recovery of your entire Jira instance.
Additional Setup
-
An account level restore will impact your entire Jira dataset. We recommend one of the following approaches:
- Testing Advanced Restore on a sandbox instance of Jira, so that your production data is unchanged while you test. As a Jira “Premium” account you will be able to create a free sandbox.
- If you are not a Premium account, you may want to simply create a NEW Jira trial, and populate it with some simple data to test.
Testing Steps
- In your Jira test account, identify 1 or more Projects to test with.
- Delete your chosen Project(s).
- Go to Jira’s trash and permanently Purge the Project(s) in the trash
- Wait a few minutes for Jira to purge your deleted Project.
- Go to the Rewind platform, under Vault view, and click the Advanced Restore tab.
- Click Select Date and select the current date and time.
-
Click Restore Items.
- Wait until you receive the Restore confirmation email before continuing with your test.
- Go to your test Jira account, Click Projects, and then All Projects. Inspect it to ensure all recreations/reversions have been completed.
Expected Result
- Deleted Projects and Issues should appear back in your Jira test environment.
💡Conclusion
We hope that your experience with the Rewind solution has been easy and effective in performing complex backup and recovery tasks for your Jira data.
As a reminder, Atlassian, like most SaaS application providers, uses the Shared Responsibility model - this means that they do not provide backups of your content. They do offer the limited ability to manually download your metadata, and while scripts can be used to retrieve and restore some of this information, the process does not offer incremental backups, granular item-level recovery, or the ability to easily recover to any point in time. It also relies on you to provide and secure a storage destination for your data.
Rewind eliminates these challenges and manual processes and delivers a fully automated solution that is trusted by over 100,000+ customers.
