This article walks through how to enable Git LFS (Large File Storage) backups for GitHub repositories using Rewind.
Availability: This feature is available by request. Contact your Account Manager or help@rewind.com to get started.
Before you begin
- Confirm your Git LFS storage size in GitHub.
- Ensure you have enough bandwidth available to complete the first backup.
How to enable Git LFS backups
Step 1: Check your Git LFS storage size
- In GitHub, go to Settings → Billing and plans → Plans and usage.
- Scroll to the Git LFS storage section and note your total usage (in GB).
Step 2: Verify your LFS bandwidth
- Git LFS backups consume bandwidth, which is billed by GitHub.
- Your first backup requires bandwidth equal to your storage size plus a buffer.
- Go to Settings → Billing and plans → Plans and usage and scroll to the Git LFS bandwidth section to confirm availability.
- If needed, purchase more Git LFS data packs to ensure the first backup can complete.
Important: If bandwidth runs out during the initial backup, the process will stop and must be restarted. Future backups only include changes, reducing bandwidth usage.
Step 3: Request LFS backup activation
Email your Account Manager or help@rewind.com with the following:
- Your Git LFS storage size (GB).
-
Written confirmation that you have sufficient bandwidth for the first backup.
Step 4: What happens next?
- A Rewind team member will confirm that Git LFS backup has been enabled.
- The first backup may take several hours, as it captures all Git LFS files along with the rest of your GitHub account data.
- It will also be the largest backup, since everything is captured in full. Future backups will only include changes, significantly reducing bandwidth usage.
FAQs
Will Rewind back up my entire Git LFS storage?
No. Rewind only backs up LFS files that are actively associated with a repository. Deleted or detached LFS files are not backed up.
Is Git LFS backup a paid feature?
During Early Access, Git LFS backups are free. Once pricing is finalized, users will receive a 90-day notice before any charges apply.
