When are backups run?
Backups are run once daily. Some items, including Product images, are backed up in real time whenever a change is saved on your Shopify store.
What happens if a backup fails?
Rewind automatically retries any failed backups within 24 hours. In the rare case that a backup fails for more than 48 hours, the Rewind team is alerted, and the backup is performed manually.
What can Rewind backup:
Shopify currently allows Rewind to back up and restore the following items:
- Products and Product Images
- Customers and Customer Tags
- Orders (Not draft orders)
- Collections (and their associated Products)
- Blogs and Blog Posts
- Pages
- Themes
Products
When it comes to Products, Rewind backs up/restores all of the following properties:
- Title
- Description
- Photos
- Variants
- Product Type
- Product Vendor
- Tags
- Price
- SKU
- Barcode
Metafields
Rewind can back up your Shopify Metafields. Backup support for Metafields depends on your subscription plan. Metafields included in backups:
- Article Metafields
- Blog Metafields
- Collection Metafields
- Custom Collection Metafields
- Customer Metafields
- Order Metafields
- Page Metafields
- Product Image Metafields

- Smart Collection Metafields
Note: Legacy Plans do not support Metafield backups. If you are interested in updating your plan to include these or want to find out if your plan does include backups for Metafields, please contact help@rewind.com.
While Rewind can't automatically restore Metafields, you can request to have it manually restored by our engineering team. Simply email us at help@rewind.com to get started.
Shopify Metaobjects
Rewind Backups for Shopify now supports Shopify Metaobjects. Metaobjects let you create custom data structures and content types beyond the standard Products, Collections, and Pages. We understand how important this resource is for you and are happy to support it.
What’s backed up:
- Metaobject Definitions
- Metaobject Entries
What can be restored:
- Advanced Restore – restores all Metaobject Definitions and Entries to a specific point in time.
- Metaobject Definitions (Granular) – restores an individual Definition.
- Metaobject Entries (Granular) – restores an individual Entry, along with its Definition version needed to support the Entry.
Before you back up Metaobjects:
- Rewind requires new permissions to access Shopify Metaobjects. When prompted, click “Update Permissions” in the Rewind app to grant access.
- You must be on a Rewind Backups for Shopify plan that supports Metaobjects. If you are interested in updating your plan to include these or want to find out if your plan does include backups for Metaobjects, please contact help@rewind.com.
Limitations:
- Metaobject Definitions and Entries are included in daily and on-demand backups only — there are no real-time backups.
Restoring Metaobject Definitions
- Field order is retained if the Definition is fully re-created.
- If a Definition already exists, Rewind updates existing fields and adds missing ones to the bottom of the list.
- Restores are non-destructive — Rewind does not delete current live fields.
- Definitions marked as Private or created by third-party apps cannot be backed up.
Restoring Metaobject Entries
- The related Metaobject Definition is restored first to ensure all required fields exist.
-
If a field references a missing resource:
- If the resource is backed up by Rewind (e.g. Products, Customers), Rewind restores that first.
- If not (e.g. Companies, Files), the field is cleared so the restore can complete.
- Fields that fail Shopify’s validation rules cannot be restored, but their data remains visible in the Vault.
- When using Advanced Restore, Rewind restores a Metaobject Definition only if its Entry is being restored.
Metaobject fields that can be backed up, but not restored:
- Companies
- Files (from the Files manager in your Store Settings – includes 3D Models, External Videos, Generic Files, Media Images, and Videos)
- Product Variants
If you’d like to confirm whether your plan includes Metaobject backups, please contact help@rewind.com.
Backed up but not automatically restored
Rewind also backs up, but cannot automatically restore your:
- Customer Saved Searches
- Giftcard Products
- Locations
- Menu Navigation
- Orders
- Product Translations in Shopify Translate & Adapt*
- Shipping Zones
- Store Policies
While the app can't automatically restore this data, we do save it and can work with you to manually recreate/restore it. Simply email us at help@rewind.com to get started.
*If your account was created on or before May 15, 2024, you will be prompted to accept new permissions before Shopify Translate & Adapt backups can begin.
Unsupported items
Lastly, due to Shopify's current settings and permissions, Rewind is not yet able to backup and/or restore the following:
- ALT Tags for Products or Product Images
- Blog Comments
- Catalogues
- Companies
- Customer Accounts (such as login/password data)
- Files (from the Files manager in your Store Settings)
- Giftcard Codes
- Other Apps (and the data located inside them)
- Product Inventory (and related fields like Weight, Measurement, "This is a physical product" checkbox, Cost per item, "Track quantity" checkbox, etc.)
- Product Reviews (as these are located within a separate app)
- Store Analytics and Graphs/Reports
- Store Settings
- URL Redirects
- Videos
Why can't Rewind back those items up?
In most cases it comes down to lack of permissions. Items we can't backup are items we can't see. Shopify decides what kinds of items we can 'see' or access using API like products or themes, but restricts access to other things like Settings because of the sensitive information contained within.
Sensitive information like credit card numbers, your passwords, staff permissions and other information like that.
