You can validate that restore functionality is working as expected by performing a test restore of a single item in your Shopify store. This process involves making a temporary change to an item, backing up the change, and then restoring the item to its previous version using Rewind.
This test allows you to confirm that Rewind backups and restore functionality are operating correctly without impacting a large amount of store data.
Before you begin
-
Use an item that can be safely edited
Choose an item where a small temporary change can be made without affecting your store operations. If preferred, you can also create a temporary test item specifically for this validation. Common examples include a product description, page content, or blog article. -
Confirm the item type is supported
Rewind can only restore items that are included in Shopify backup coverage. See the Shopify backup and restore coverage guide to confirm which data types are supported.
Steps to test restore functionality
Create a baseline backup:
- Log in to your Rewind account.
- Click Integrations > Shopify from the left-hand menu and select your Shopify store.
- Click the Back Up Now button in the upper-right corner.
- Wait for the backup to complete.
Rewind will send an email confirming the backup has finished. You can also monitor backup activity in the Rewind Audit Log.
Make a test change in Shopify:
- Log in to your Shopify admin and make a small edit to an item that Rewind supports in backups. For example, you could update a field such as a product description, modify a page title, or delete a test item you created earlier. If you're unsure which item types are supported, review the Shopify backup and restore coverage guide.
Capture the change in a backup:
- Return to Rewind and click Back Up Now to perform another manual backup. This captures the updated version of the item so Rewind can compare it with the earlier backup and identify which changes or deletions need to be reverted during the restore. See When and why to run a manual backup before restoring for more details.
Restore the item to its previous version:
- In Rewind, open the All Items tab.
- Locate the item you edited and click View Versions.
- Select the earlier version from the version dropdown.
- Click Restore to this version at the bottom of the overview.
- Wait for the restore job to complete.
Rewind will send an email notification when the restore finishes. You can also monitor restore activity in the Rewind Audit Log.
Validate the restore result:
- Return to your Shopify admin and review the item you edited earlier.
- Confirm that the temporary change has been reverted. If the earlier version of the item has been restored successfully, this confirms that restore functionality is working as expected.
