Upgrading to the Advanced tier and enabling features like BYOK, BYOS, or CDR requires a full vault reset. This article explains what happens to your data and why.
Covered in this article:
Overview
When you upgrade to the Advanced tier and enable one or more Advanced features — such as Bring Your Own Key (BYOK), Bring Your Own Storage (BYOS), or Custom Data Residency (CDR) — Rewind is required to perform a full vault reset for that service instance. Your existing backup data will be permanently deleted, and a fresh backup will begin automatically once the process is complete.
What will happen
Once you confirm the vault reset:
- Your existing backup data will be permanently deleted. All previously stored backups for this instance will be removed and cannot be recovered.
- Your infrastructure will be upgraded. Your instance is migrated to dedicated servers configured to support your selected Advanced features.
- A fresh backup will begin automatically. Rewind will start a new full backup using your new configuration. The time to complete the initial backup will vary depending on the size of your data.
- Expect approximately 5–15 minutes of downtime during the migration.
If you are enabling multiple Advanced features at once (e.g., BYOK + CDR), they will all be applied in a single reset — you won't need to repeat this process for each one.
Why this is required
Advanced features like BYOK, BYOS, and CDR change the fundamental way your backup data is stored and encrypted. Because these configurations affect the underlying storage infrastructure, it is not possible to migrate your existing backups to the new setup — a new full backup must be started from scratch under the new configuration.
This type of reset is sometimes referred to as a beginning-of-time backup, and it can also occur in other scenarios where your backup infrastructure changes significantly, such as data residency changes.
Common questions
Can I recover my data after the reset?
No. Once the vault reset is confirmed, your existing backup data is permanently deleted and cannot be restored. If you are unsure about proceeding, please contact your account manager or our Support team before confirming.
Do I need to do anything after the reset completes?
No action is required. Rewind will automatically begin a new full backup once the migration is complete.
Can I enable multiple Advanced features at the same time?
Yes. You can enable any combination of BYOK, BYOS, and CDR in a single reset — for example, BYOK and CDR together. This is fully supported and won't require additional resets.
How long will my service be unavailable?
Downtime during the migration is approximately 5–15 minutes.
What if I change my mind after confirming?
This action cannot be undone. We recommend reviewing your configuration carefully before confirming. If you have questions, reach out to your account manager or our Support team in advance.
